Great ideas Ben, thank you – The garden here in Pennsylvania is still buried under inches of snow and ice – itching to start…hopefully soon
Would the wire fencing work for raspberries?
good ideas. Something one might consider is in regard to the Florida weave is to put braces across the top because as one gets higher the string pulls the stakes together and the lower strings get slack.
Less disease and damaged veggies by growing vertically š
Out of curiosity where do you get your pallet collars from I've tried online and they are charging alot for them.
I still have some left but have opted for the raised metal beds.
⤠this. I'd like to add the use of construction fences. They are very sturdy and fairly cheap when secondhand. I use them to grow pumpkins.
I have a lot of trees and bushes around my garden, but would like to create some raised beds. How would I do this without the roots of the surrounding plants invading them eventually?
Cattle panels here in the USA are about 4ft wide and 16ft long. I have two placed together for my grapes. I have two close together for small pumpkins and beans. One for tomatoes so they can grow up and over without my needing to fuss with poles or cages. I have another that Iām going to use this time for loofah. I have cut a few to use for peas, cucumber and other smaller plants that vine. I have 8 sections for that. Itās incredibly affordable, easy to install and incredibly reliable.
Just what we needed! We were thinking of doing just this, and you've given us loads of ideas. Yours is the best gardening channel out there. Wonderful!
Thank you for all these ideas! I live in Zone 4 and it would be great to get ideas on how to build features that protect from the cold, especially for crops such as peppers and aubergines, for gardens without the space for a greenhouse or a polytunnel. Thanks!
Great video! We found that concrete reinforcing wire made great tomato cages. Our first set lasted 30 years. Tall and durable.
Can I ask where you got your pallet collars from and the livestock fencing
I use 8' lengths of 1" pipe (recycled well pipe) pounded into the ground as the support for my bean teepees: drop a heavy eyebolt into the top of the pipe, and tie strings (recycled jute baling twine) to the eye bolt, then secure the strings to the ground with tent pegs (also recycled). At the end of the season, I can untie the strings at top and bottom, and compost them, vines and all.
Some links to what youāre showing would make me over the moon ā¤
Nothing new here.
Wow, jealous. £7 or $10 for a pallet collar. I'm guessing that's USD.
In Australia, a pallet collar (not called that here, but looks identical) is AUD$59. It's so expensive it's not even worth trying one out when you can build something much sturdier and longer lasting for only a little bit more.
You have a well sheltered garden by the looks of it but in an open space the vertical structures will need good wind support. Good cheap ideas for my allotment.
Really helpful advice. Where did you buy the cattle panels?
Great ideas, thanks for sharing!
This is a fab video thank you.
I have a new allotment and wish to plant my raspberries and blackberries along the sides. Would any of these methods be okay to support them? Looking for the cheapest way possible atm unfortunately.
Thank you for all the advice š
Another very helpful and inspiring video! What variety of bamboo do you grow to get such sturdy and useful canes in your environment?
Do you need to fasten the cubes vines to the structure or will they naturally grow up them?
Some excellent ideas, thank you!! I love the biodegradable jute as well because I've only been gardening for a few years and I've never attempted trellising before. This is a good way for me to try that without spending a small fortune while I figure things out. This may be silly, do you think it's strong enough for butternut squash? I failed with that last year but am trying again this year and want to train them vertically to save soace and keep my dogs off them. Lol last year they were helping themselves to my strawberries and kale and one wee brat jumoed onto my raised bed to dig up her own carrot. I still can't believe that! This year I need puppy proof caging around my crops.
I love this idea. I have a garden that runs north to south with the house on the north end and trees line both east and west sides of the long garden area. I've wanted to put in arched trellising but unsure of where to put them. I don't want to shade anything out. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Ben, I generally plan my allotment on a bed by bed basis where each bed has one or two crops per season, but could you do a video showing how you would plan beds that are used for a succession of different crops to keep a small family in veg from say April to October with a few overwintering options? Basically I want to get the best out of my plot without creating gluts – not much to ask š
I have a question, in my allotment ive grown chillys for the 1st time last summer, I cut the plant accordingly & left them in the greenhouse but i never emptied the pot & washed the roots and re-potted it with fresh soil. Can I do this now in February or am I best waiting til mid march when it finishes its hibernation
What diameter for a circular tomato cage for indeterminate tomatoes?
I have Moneymaker (boring I know) and Ailsa Craig.
I adore your videos and am a huge fan!
Unrelated to this video question: I think my quince tree each winter, but Iād like to shorten its height. When and how can I ātopā it safely?
Ben please could you do a video about pinching out espically the science of it and reassurance it wont kill the baby plants. Thank you
Thanks for the tips Rapunzel š
Can you make a video on repotting plants when still Verry young Iām struggling with my tomatoes and peppers on when to repot ššš±
Great video, thank you!
Thanks again for sharing this great garden tips! šÆ
Our cattle panels here in the US are WAY different. They are rugged, VERY thick wire that is quite hard to cut. Like, I have to have my husband use the bolt cutters. They are 4' high, and 17' long. So, I put 'T' posts in, put the narrow base of the panel against the posts and work very hard to bend it into an arch and settle them against the other posts. Even with a huge garden, growing UP is nice, and I grow vertically in the hoop house, of course. TIP: I thought that I'd outwit the squash bugs by putting all 'squashy' things into the hoop house, which is fairly far from the outdoor garden. I've usually got an early cucumber, summer squash in there with tomatoes and peppers, and have never had any bugs at all. Well, I didn't outwit the squash bugs, and it was a horrible, terrible disaster, since I couldn't get to all of the leaves that the bugs were under – it was a jungle in there! My experiment failed, so back to all the pumpkins and winter squash outside!
I don't use tomato cages, sticking my hand in between the squares of fencing. I put these sturdy cattle panels in straight and tie the tomatoes to them. But I don't garden in little boxes either. I normally have between 30 and 40 tomato plants, a big 70 x 100 outdoor garden, and I use the hoop house for a couple in there to be earlier than the outdoor ones.
Where did you get the pricey arches?
Yes very interesting I just love itā¤
Where did you get your pallets
Ty!!! You are an angel and a gem!!! āØāØāØ
Hi Ben, hope u don't mind how did u make those garden raise beds for £7 please
Your wellcome
Fabulous ideas. Very practical for those of us on a budget. Have you got a link where you bought your cattle fencing from? Thanks in advance š
Hi Ben, I know you said they were expensive but where did you purchase the trellis arches you use for your runner beans – they are still looking good when bare so might be worth the investment? Many thanks in advance š·
Excellent video and a fantastic tutorial as always that I want to implement in my smallāish veg garden. But can you please advise where I might get the metal uprights that you use in this video? I have looked everywhere for something similar and sturdy enough to support said arches but coming up blankā¦.. ā¹ļø Thanks.
