The Bloomfield Garden Coalition began their Community Garden project at the Bloomfield Library main branch in the spring of 2024, with the installation of large planting beds and several raised beds, the planting of many varieties of produce and the introduction of a series of children’s activities centered on learning about good nutrition and growing your own food Related learning opportunities for children allowed children to learn about how to harvest in the garden, clean and prepare vegetables and the benefits of fruits and vegetables in our diets.
Later, the group expanded its efforts to the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library, installing large raised beds for vegetables and joined with a shop class at WRV to bring raised beds to Linton’s Autumn Trace Senior Living.
This year, the group begins anew with the first meeting of the season. The Bloomfield Garden Coalition will meet for a planning meeting on Tuesday, March 10 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Bloomfield Public Library. All persons interested in joining the Coalition are welcome to attend. The purpose of the meeting is to make initial plans for the 2026 Community Garden at the library, including the cultivation of the gardens and nutrition education activities for families.
Spring and summer plantings are planned, with tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplant, summer squash, beans, cucumbers, broccoli, cabbage, basil, marigolds, oregano and rosemary, everything grown from seed by the volunteer group
