Located in the TX East Dallas area- trying to find the best tree/plant to have all along the fence for privacy. We have apartments behind us, so something dense and tall that can survive the Texas weather would be nice- doesn’t have to be quick growing, but that would be a plus! I know nothing about plants, so I’m open to recommendations!

I would suggest a native evergreen cultivar that grows tall without getting very wide, so you don’t lose half your backyard. Maybe something like an eastern red cedar cultivar.
southern magnolia, yaupon holly, wax myrtle
the magnolia has many cultivars that stay more manageable sizes.
Consider [Zanthoxylum clava-herculis](http://texastreeid.tamu.edu/content/treedetails/?id=133). It’s a host plant of the Giant Swallowtail and, since its native to the Dallas area, is adapted to your weather and soil.
Another good one would be [Possumhaw](http://texastreeid.tamu.edu/content/pdf/Possumhaw.pdf)
You might be a bit too the north of where [Ashe Juniper (Juniperus ashei)](http://texastreeid.tamu.edu/content/TreeDetails/?id=53&t=J) occurs but that could be a good option.
There is also always [Honey Mesquite.](http://texastreeid.tamu.edu/content/TreeDetails/?id=82&t=M)
Here’s a list of your native shrubs and trees that are at least 8 ft tall:

If you want year round privacy from a native evergreen, options are pretty narrow – Yaupon Holly, Eastern Red Cedar and Carolina Cherry Laurel. Juniperus ashei is at the extreme of its native range in Dallas, but might be more stressed than other species.
