Hey friends, 6B here in Detroit. We had some really warm weather, but it’s about to plunge back down. Typically midwestern March. But I noticed some beautiful new growth on my hyssop plants, and was curious if I should cover it to shield it from the cold snap coming, or if it’s fine the way it is.

These are second year plants that are quite established in raised beds (for now)

Even if the cold snap kills the fresh growth, it will still come back with vengeance when the time is right.

These puppies are purple because they are producing anthocyanins which protect the new leaves from cold related oxidation damage. I’d say your hyssop knows what’s up. You could pile up some loose leaves around it if you want to give it extra love, but they’ll likely be ok either way!

Hyssop has handled seasonal changes for millennia. It knows what it’s doing and is not fooled by these spring teases like we can be. All good.

Ugh I love hyssop. Ours has the same sweet little leaves.
