Just a harmless garter snake coming to get a meal of bugs from the pile. No need to worry 🤣

Good friend. Keeps bad friends away by eating them.

Does their excrement add nutrients back to the pile?

Such a cute lil snek!
I have geckos in my compost, so I try to give them a bit of warning before turning it — Spray it down with water, gently kick the sides of the bin, etc. And a lot of the denizens come running out, or I think they’re more ready to run with a disturbance. Could be worth trying.
Also, turning the compost will get more of the bugs out for snek food! Circle of life.
