The Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Wyoming County will host a free Community Seed and Plant Exchange from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 21, at the Dietrich Theater in Tunkhannock. Gardeners of all experience levels are invited to share seeds and swap houseplants during the open-house style event.
Master Gardener volunteers will be available to answer home gardening questions and help diagnose problems with houseplants. At 10:30 a.m., the Master Gardeners will present “Tips for Healthy Houseplants.”
How does the event work? Bring viable garden seeds or houseplants to share with others. Vegetable, herb, and flower seeds, either commercially purchased or saved from the garden, are welcome at the exchange tables (no seeds saved from hybrids as they are unlikely to grow true-to-type). Houseplants should be pest and disease-free. The Master Gardeners will provide base stock with a selection of unique and favorite seed and houseplant varieties.
How much to share? Attendees are encouraged to share what they can and take what they need.
How to package and label? Bring seeds already portioned for sharing. Small zip-top bags and coin-sized envelopes work well for exchanging seeds. The Master Gardeners will also have envelopes available. Clearly label with as much information as possible, including the common name and variety and the scientific name (genus and species). Houseplants should be in a pot or recycled container (no unpotted root balls) and clearly labeled.
The event takes place at the Dietrich Theater, 60 E. Tioga Street, Tunkhannock. Additional event details are available online at extension.psu.edu/community-seed-and-plant-exchange. Advanced registration is not required; walk-in attendees are welcome. For questions about the event, contact the Master Gardeners at 570-996-2249 or [email protected].
The next Master Gardener Basic Training course in Wyoming County is October 2026-March 2027. Master Gardeners are volunteers who support Penn State Extension’s outreach mission by educating their local communities on best practices in sustainable horticulture and environmental stewardship.
In Wyoming County, Master Gardeners maintain a pollinator-friendly garden at the Wyoming County Fairgrounds, record observations at Pollinator Monitoring plots at the Wyoming County Conservation District, help with conservation projects in the community, host the annual Community Seed and Plant Exchange, maintain a Seed Library, and teach classes, including the Seed to Supper beginner vegetable gardening program.
