Weeds can grow anywhere there is space, which means gardeners often find them popping through cracks and ruining the appearance of clean paving. They’ll also pop up in the middle of the lawn, and a lawn mower will not remove them during the cutting process, meaning they’ll spread and take over the grass.
Alan Titchmarsh, who has shared a plethora of gardening tips and tricks throughout his career, has recently shared a YouTube video on how to get rid of weeds. In the video, the gardening expert shared a simple, effective way to get rid of lawn weeds.
Alan said: “Another area where weeds thrive, particularly those weeds which make little rosettes and stay quite low, is the lawn because they can sneak underneath the mower.
“The mower goes over the top, the weeds remain behind. Things like daisies, dandelions, plantains. Now you can use lawn weed-and-feed. That’s the easiest way, but again, being organic, I don’t like to do that.
“I’ve had this grass here for 20-odd years and it’s never been given weed killer. I use two distinct implements.”
The first item Alan showed the viewers was a daisy grubber.
Alan explained that a daisy grubber is good for sliding underneath the rosettes of daisies and prizing them out.
The second item Alan uses to get rid of larger lawn weeds is a narrow trowel. He said: “You can push right the way around them, prize the root out and hey presto, there it is, gone.
“Now, I know it seems labour-intensive, but it’s what we call gardening.”
Daisy grubbers and trowels can be purchased online for as little as £4 each, or found in the tool section of garden centres.
