This is growing in a few large-ish areas of my backyard. NW Austin south facing backyard.

What is it? Weed, or potential friend?

For context, my backyard has some grasses (St. Augustine and I think winter rye grass?) but sadly i have mostly weeds and I just want green in this space.

What’s all this? Potential for a ground cover? Or deep enemy I should pull out?

Thanks in advance for Any advice!

Henbit Deadnettle maybe? I would pull…

Non-native, short-lived, bees like it, so does powdery mildew, I keep the dandelions and pull this

  3. It is henbit. Not a groundcover, it is an annual weed that will be dead by this summer. It will keep reseeding though so if you are trying to establish something else you should get rid of it.

Henbit deadnettle is also edible, if you feel so inclined.

Henbit. Let it be. It blooms flowers for pollinators. Henbit’s in the mint family, and edible. Friend to chickeeed, horseherb, and wood sorrel.
