I’ll admit it, I was jealous of y’all showing off your Walmart cactus scores so I eagerly headed off to my local wallyworld is search of my own beauties. Imagine my disappointment when I only found 5 practically dead house plants.

But I reminded myself that it was January. In New England. There’s still 6ft of snow on the ground. Be patient. They will come.

Every Sunday morning I made a special trip just to see if they had arrived and every week I was disappointed.

Until today.

I was off my game a bit due to the clock change and a sick old man dog so I got a late start. By the time I arrived, it was already busy. I didn’t need anything from the home goods side of the store so I grabbed a cart and headed for the grocery aisles. I glanced over at the garden entrance and thought – no way, there’s no way they’re here yet and I’m busy. I took a few more steps down the aisle and that little voice said – stop, just go look, it’ll only take a minute.

So I turn around and head towards garden, mumbling to myself, they’re not going to be here. I walk in a see overstock. Not a good sign. I turn the corner, see more boxes but then I see a long plant table full of philodendron. And they’re alive! Okay, this is a good sign! I keep walking and see the second table. This one also has philodendron but then I see them. Cactus. I walk around to the backside and my heart skipped a beat. There they were. Just like in all the Reddit pictures. The holy grail of rare cactus options in a freaking Walmart.

My financial self control is immediately abandoned because at $7.97 a pop, nothing is going to stop me. I want one of everything! I zone in on the boobie cactus. I’m definitely not leaving without one. There are 4 to choose from. I’m over analyzing every bump, every crevice. I make my decision and move on to the others but I’m second guessing my boobie selection the entire time as I’m grabbing the other cacti. I go back to the remaining boobies. I line them all up in a row to compare them. Suddenly, I knock over the one I wanted. It falls to ground under the table. I gasp! Oh no, my beautiful boobie princess, what have I done to you?!? Now I’m crawling under the table to retrieve it, imagining just how ridiculous I must look on the security cameras. But I really don’t care because I am on a cactus mission.

Well…mission accomplished. These are my newest additions. I may have to go back for more. I’m so so glad that I listened to that inner voice today.
