We replaced a piece of this pointless turf island at a local park with hundreds of native wildflowers. Within a year, many species of bees, butterflies, moths, and other insects have returned. The highlight of the year for me was finding a few Golden Northern Bumble Bees (Bombus fervidus) pollinating the Penstemon digitalis that we planted. This is just one of many declining species of native bees that don’t get nearly enough attention!

Thanks to a grant from the Pennsylvania Native Plant Society, my non-profit eco-restoration group, Colonial Canopy Trees (soon to be the Community Canopy Project) was able to implement a native garden installation at a local township park.

I hope this inspires you to do something similar on your property or within your community!

  1. That's enough for me; I'm subscribed! πŸ‘β™₯️🐝πŸͺ»πŸŒΌπŸŒ»πŸŒΈπŸŒΎπŸŒΏπŸ€βš˜οΈ

  2. Very glad to see it's been improved so much, natives being planted in places like this do so much for local flora/fauna.
Though I will say that It was worth just being there by absorbing an eff ton more rain than concrete/bitumen.

  3. this is brilliant! it'd be so cool if there was a scientific study done on that patch to see what insects it attracted

  4. In Brazil it is common to have mango, coconut, and native trees in our backyard and frontyard. Even parks and urban places

  5. Turned my back yard into a native ecosystem using PA wild flowers and grasses like Pennsylvania sedge. My kids absolutely loves seeing all the critters that make our yard their home!

  6. You have gone above and beyond, not just replacing a grass patch with native flora for beauty and food for the bees, but providing educational material via QR code. Good on you, mate! God bless you!

  7. I did this in Portland, Oregon on a patch that was mostly gravel. When they started growing a crew assuming they were weeds chopped them down. Fortunately, the flowers were more resilient than the work crew and quickly filled the area with beautiful flowers. I experienced great joy when I would drive by and see people sitting in there enjoying them. 😊

  8. I'm actually working on restoring my family's pasture.
Since the native grasses are more acclimated to their particular climates, I think it'd ve healthier for the cattle. And once they've been around it long enough, maybe their chances of getting illnesses will decrease.

  9. Tiene años que no veo plantas con flores, abejas y mariposas 😒
Gracias por hacer todo ese servicio a la vida ❀
