Do you remember a couple of weeks ago when I mentioned my garden looked like a crime scene? Well, I feel changes coming, don’t you?
My great yard inspection began in earnest yesterday. I stood there with my hands on my hips, nodding proudly at the small but promising signs of life. I thought I might need grief counseling this winter until I saw a tiny green shoot popping out from the bottom of my Fairytrail Hydrangea. There is a garden fairy!
Temperatures are expected to be much warmer this coming week, and I am sure we will all start to lose our minds as we get outside and really assess what’s going on in our gardens. I can see the buds on the hydrangeas and forsythia. I know there is hope. But now we prepare.
Have you cleaned your tools? Are your gloves matched up in the garage? Have you purchased the bags of potting soil?
This is when I say to myself that I am going to have a beautiful garden this year. But, really, who am I kidding? I will start strong, sure, but then it gets hot. And we all know what it’s like working in the Charleston summer heat.
So before that gets the best of us in months to come, let’s enjoy this current perfect Charleston weather and get started. Go ahead and pull the first weed and trim the dead stuff off something. You will feel productive. Then treat yourself to something fun to remind you of spring’s color and magic. The garden centers are starting to get their deliveries, and of course, Plantasia is coming to Mount Pleasant on April 11.
And just like that, hope has been restored — until allergy season hits, but that’s for a different article. If you still aren’t quite feeling up to getting back into the garden, another idea is to clean your garage. Spring cleaning is almost upon us, one way or another!
