Hey,

I just tested this mesh for the raised bed, and it doesnt let water through. I was wondering if it was smart to make some hole sin it so water doesnt pool up but actually poores out when it gets too much water.

What do you guys think?

I don’t think you should use the mesh at all. What’s on the bottom of the bed?

Weeds are air born…the seeds blow in the wind.

Once that dirt fills the bed…weeds will have a hard time growing from the bottom up. Weed seeds land on top of the bed and start their cycle

Also depending on what veggies you are growing they might need to access the soil under the mesh if you use it

You never want a plant in any container that doesn’t drain

Unless that plant is a succulent

I would drill holes in the bottom of the box then generously apply linseed oil. No liner.

    Update:

    I am afraid i wasn’t completely clear.

The box itself has openings in the bottom. That is where the mesh if for. To protect the inside of the box from the dirt. So when i fill the box with dirt the mesh is on the bottom of all the dirt. So when i want to water it or it rains, i dont want the bottom of the dirt to be soaking wet.

Hope this made it a bit more clear

Yes, absolutely. Trapping the water will just make a swamp. Then the roots will rot. Not good.

Reposting my comment because automod deleted it:

Why are you lining them with that?

That looks to be landscaping fabric used to suppress weeds underneath decorative rocks and gravel and has no use here.

Also, your boxes seem to have casters underneath. That would make them pots/containers, not raised beds which do not have a bottom and are simply a frame placed on the ground and filled with dirt.

If there’s no holes in the bottom, you definitely want to put some for drainage because roots need oxygen and will drown if submerged in water. This appears to be untreated wood so I imagine the box is going to rot out sooner than later so keep that in mind too.

What do you plan on growing!?

Short answer, no. No holes needed.

I use very similar beds and also use the fabric because I want to prevent losing as much soil as possible. My beds have enough space in between the slats so the water drains.
