COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – There’s a rule of thumb to follow when taking care of your lawn following the winter season.
“We want to wait to fertilize until we have mowed the lawn twice,” said Jayla Fry with Texas A&M AgriLife. “Sometimes this time of year we may want to go ahead and mow, but sometimes we’re just mowing weeds or even the last season grass or something like that.”
Fry says you want to wait until your warm season lawn is actively growing before you fertilize.
“You’ll start to see weed and feed products on the market right now,” she said. “The problem with that is that one of those products is essentially going to be wasted. And so this is an opportune time where you really want to do two separate products.”
She says it may be a good time to put out a pre-emergent to stop weeds that will be coming out this summer. She says you could be wasting your fertilizer if you were to use a weed and feed product right now.
“Be patient and fertilize at the right time,” she said.
