The 80-degree days Southern California experienced as March began prompted the Promenade area of Descanso Gardens, the pretty stretch that is synonymous with colorful spring tulips, to buoyantly burst into purples, reds, and pinks.

This is exactly what should be taking petal-perfect place around the Promenade in March, as over 30,000 tulip bulbs were planted by volunteers and staff members in January.

The early days of March are a marvelous sight just inside the garden’s entrance.

But the tiny twist? The big waves of tulip splendor generally rev up a bit later in the month, making this early-March-start something rather notable.

In short? If you eagerly await this uplifting sight, you may want to make your way to the La Cañada Flintridge garden a little earlier in the month, though there should be a robust tulip showing for a few weeks to come.

Your best bet: Checking the Descanso Gardens social pages for frequent floral updates.

There’s are other spectacular sights, and smells, around the expansive destination, which rambles over 150 acres: The location’s much-loved lilacs are beginning to bloom.

We can almost smell the famous lilacs of Descanso Gardens from here.

It’s true that there are many fine lilac fragrances and sachets and soaps to savor in this world, but lingering before an actual lilac bush that is at the top of its olfactory power feel like an effervescent errand best made in spring.

Don’t say nose to this opportunity: Go soon and enjoy the heady scent.

Or the end of winter, rather: Springtime hasn’t quite made its official entrance, but we can find our scentful spring zing in the blooming world at Descanso Gardens.
