Columbia Garden Club luncheon
The Columbia Garden Club (CGC) is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year with the theme “A Century in Bloom: Cultivating Gardens, Hearts, and Legacy.”
A luncheon commemorating the founding was held February 27 at Trinity Cathedral where the club’s first meetings were held.
Founded in 1926, the club’s centennial has been formally recognized by the South Carolina House of Representatives for its century of service to the beautification and enrichment of Columbia and the state of South Carolina.
The club maintains several scenic locations in Columbia as part of its legacy. They include the Memorial Rose Garden at the University of South Carolina Horseshoe.
Each year, the club decorates the Governor’s Mansion for the holiday season and the Christmas tree at the State House for the governor’s annual carolighting ceremony. It also maintains continued support for Historic Columbia, Riverbanks Botanical Garden, and Blue Star Memorial Markers.

The first president of the CGC was Sarah Porter Smith Boylston. The CGC has installed a bronze statue of Mrs. Boylston in front of her home in commemoration of the 100th anniversary. It will be unveiled April 17. Known as the Caldwell-Boylston House, it is adjacent to the South Carolina Governor’s Mansion.
