The BBC chose a Moroccan-inspired garden in central Brighton to launch the latest round of its annual garden makeover competition.
Created by garden design studio Fern & Pine, the courtyard “shows how even the smallest gardens can become transformative spaces when design, planting and craftsmanship work together,” says founder Alick Nee.
“It highlights the strength of local design talent and the growing demand for outdoor spaces that enhance both lifestyle and property value.”
The garden was built by local landscape contractors Grove Gardens. Ifeatures two zones – an intimate outdoor dining space within the side return and a relaxed lounging area in the main garden. Trellis screening, pergolas, laser-cut metal panels and layered planting help to create a sense of privacy.
“This project shows how even the smallest gardens can become transformative spaces when design, planting and craftsmanship work together,” says Nee. “We wanted to create something that felt immersive and transportive, while still being practical for everyday use.”
It was selected for filming as part of a segment on The One Show that kickstart the 2026 RHS and BBC The One Show’s Pocket Garden Makeover Prize.
