Has anyone had a spike do this? I haven’t seen it before and she did not this last time she bloomed. Was wondering if anyone had seen this before!

WOW! I guess it’s normal some for phals. Please post again when it’s in full bloom. I would love to see that.

    May I just say:

    Holy shit!

That’s pretty good obviously it’s got good sunlight and is very happy with its growing situation.

There is a potential that this orchid is a 4N tetraploid! Tetraploidy is an uncommon occurrence in a variety of organisms where they have 4 sets of chromosomes instead of 2 (diploid). When it occurs in plants, it typically makes the plant in question overall better in every way. Stronger growth structure, longer lasting sturdy blooms, advanced root structures…truly a sought after genetic characteristic for hybridizers and breeders alike. I should note, I’m not saying with certainty that this is what is going on with your orchid, but there is strong supporting evidence of it. I have a 4n phal that has thick, branching spikes like this👍
