The exhibition distills the essence of the natural world through semi-abstract interpretations of trees, lichens, birds’ nests and more. Organizers describe the artwork as a deep immersion into the energies of the natural world, using vivid colors and fluid lines to reflect how the artists view the natural world.

Trained as a biologist, Nuebel brings a scientist’s eye to the flora and fauna of Sonoma County, depicting the complex structures of everyday things like birds’ nests and tree lichens.

“I seek to dissolve myself into the act of observational documentation — not to remove my self and biases (as the scientific method advocates), but to acknowledge and celebrate my role as the conduit between subject and canvas, such that the subjective experience becomes part of what is observed,” said Nuebel.

McCormack works through collage — using pieces of botanical prints, musical scores and poetry in combination with her brushwork.

“The images in my paintings describe an interior theater where the relationship of energy to limitation unfolds in an optical drama that includes botanical growth, landscape design and architectural elements,” said McCormack about her artwork, which reflects strong currents of energy that run through all living things.

The exhibit hours at Alley Gallery will be noon to 4 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. Admission is free.
