Grass often becomes overrun with moss in early spring, but there is an easy gardening method to strengthen grass so it comes back thicker and greener.Picture of a mossy lawn

With spring nearly upon us, lawns are set to spring back to life, but gardeners must act now to prevent moss from taking hold. The early spring period poses the greatest risk for moss growth, as grass remains vulnerable whilst recovering from winter’s harsh conditions.

This vulnerability allows moss to compete aggressively for sunlight, space and nutrients, potentially weakening the turf and hindering its recovery.

Matt Adams, an expert from The Relentless Gardener, has revealed a straightforward method to eliminate moss whilst simultaneously strengthening your lawn. He explained: “Iron sulphate is a widely used product on lawns. It is, of course, known for its strength in controlling or killing moss. That’s not all, though, it can also help grass with photosynthesis, meaning it will help give it a nice green colour whilst adding some much-needed nutrients into the soil.”

This mineral salt works by reacting with water to chemically scorch moss, causing significant damage. Whilst safe for grass when applied correctly, iron sulphate extracts moisture from moss, rapidly dehydrating it due to its shallow structure and lack of root system.

Grass requires iron to produce chlorophyll, the compound responsible for its green colouration, and within days of treatment, your lawn should appear noticeably healthier and more vibrant. Chlorophyll, which aids plants in harnessing sunlight for photosynthesis, means that iron sulphate can provide your lawn with the energy it needs to grow thicker grass during spring, reports the Express.

Not only does it eliminate moss, but it also prevents the grass from turning yellow and maintains its health, reducing the likelihood of moss regrowth later in the season.

Here’s how to use iron sulphate to banish moss from your lawn:

It’s worth noting that lawns often become moss-ridden over winter due to soil compaction and waterlogging caused by icy conditions.

To prevent moss from returning, you’ll need to aerate and scarify your lawn first to ensure proper soil drainage.

Iron sulphate can be purchased from a garden centre, typically available as lawn sand, fertiliser, or a water-soluble product.

Never apply pure iron to your grass, as it is highly potent. It must always be mixed with water, sand, or fertiliser; otherwise, it could scorch both your lawn and the moss.

Early spring is the ideal time to use lawn sand, as it provides a nutrient boost to your lawn. Be cautious with fertilisers, as they can harm grass if used during colder weather.

After rainfall, apply lawn sand containing iron sulphate. This allows it to dissolve easily, promoting a lush, emerald green lawn and keeping moss at bay throughout spring.
