A gardening speaker series is set to launch at Earthwise Agassiz on March 18.

Earthwise announced that the Earthwise Agassiz Garden Club Speaker Series will kick off on Wednesday, March 18, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Earthwise Agassiz Farmhouse, 6031 Golf Rd. Admission is free.

The speaker series is the first step toward the launch of the Earthwise Garden Club, which is scheduled for later this year. Earthwise said the club “aims to provide a welcoming forum for people to connect over a shared interest in gardening, whether they are seasoned growers or just getting started.”

“The Agassiz-Harrison community includes a strong base of retirees with deep gardening knowledge, as well as a growing number of young families and new residents who may be eager to learn,” Earthwise stated. “The Garden Club will create opportunities for long-time gardeners to share their experience and for beginners to gain confidence and skills.”

The first speaker will be Simon Fraser University’s Dr. Elizabeth Elle, a conservation ecologist and professor. Elle will present on ecological gardening, exploring how to maintain biodiversity in your hard and make a more productive space.

Elle’s research spans 25 years, focusing on plant-insect interactions across farms, natural areas, habitat restorations and gardens throughout B.C.

The speaker series will continue on a bi-monthly basis. Pam Erikson of Erikson’s Daylily Gardens and Perennials (located in Langley Townships) will speak on climate-resilient perennials on May 20.

Earthwise is based in Agassiz and Delta, dedicated to promoting sustainable agriculture, protecting urban habitat and fighting food insecurity.
