Mimic its woodland origins as much as possible when planting

Clematis armandii in bloom

Clematis armandii in bloom

At last a hint of spring in the air, and nature is responding with the appearance of trees in bloom. You’ll notice white blossoms on dark-branched trees along the roads – these are blackthorn trees (Prunus spinosa), and those flowers will develop into sloe berries, which can be fermented to make sloe gin.

One of my favourite sights in spring is the emergence of Clematis armandii. This is an evergreen clematis with leathery long leaves and white, star-shaped flowers which are scented – some say like almonds.
