At least a 19L (5gal) bucket is recommended for tomatoes/zuc is to allow enough air gap (height) for the roots while sufficient nutrient level for the water roots. The smaller the pot, the less leeway you have keeping the roots healthy. My indeterminant tomatoes are consistently kept in +2gal (7.5L) nutrient reservoir using the Kratky Method using a 5gal bucket.
