$2,000 Grants Boost Herkimer Community Gardens for 2026

HERKIMER, N.Y. — Seven community gardens in Herkimer County will receive $2,000 each to boost local food access and education.

Cornell Cooperative Extension Herkimer County announced the awards, which are funded by the New York State Urban Farm and Community Garden Grant Program.

The selected gardens will become Veggie Van Host Sites for the 2026 growing season as part of the From the Ground Up program.

The gardens will work with CCE Herkimer County educators and Master Gardener volunteers to plan educational programs from late June through October.

As part of the award, each garden will expand its growing capacity and host activities alongside the Veggie Van program.

Visitors can tour the gardens, learn how produce is grown, see how it is sold through the Veggie Van, and attend cooking demonstrations featuring seasonal ingredients.

The funding can be used for seeds, soil, compost, raised bed materials, tools, irrigation supplies and other infrastructure.

The gardens receiving the awards are Frankfort Community Garden, Herkimer Community Garden, Ilion Community Garden, Salvation Army in Herkimer Community Garden, Little Falls Co-op Community Garden, Mohawk Community Garden and Old Forge Community Garden.
