So you want to get into gardening? And you have no idea where to start? Join the club. Perhaps you’ve recently moved to a new place with a terrace or a garden, or perhaps you’re finally choosing to engage with an existing plot of land. Whichever it may be, you’ll be contending with an enormous mass of information on where to start, what layout is best, soil types and garden aspect, as well as figuring out what to plant and when. The best way to avoid becoming overwhelmed is to take things one step at a time, and lucky for us the first step is a joyful leap, because all it involves is arming yourself with the best tools for the job. Below, we’ve rounded up everything you need, from footwear to forks.
A word from our garden editor
When it comes to selecting tools, our garden editor, Clare Foster offers the following advice: ‘Having a set of trusted garden tools makes life so much easier. Good tools and equipment can reduce the time it takes to complete a task, and they can truly mean the difference between enjoying and resenting what you have to do in the garden. For traditional gardening tools like spades and forks it’s worth investing in good quality implements made from high carbon steel otherwise you will find yourself having to buy them every few years. For smaller tools you will find yourself building up your own eclectic collection – tools that you use again and again that become firm favourites.’
Gloves
The number one tool available to any gardener is their hands, and a sturdy, yet flexible pair of gloves are the perfect accompaniment. These bright and beautiful Burgon and Ball gloves are our favourites. Comfortable to wear, they have cushioned palms and gathered wrists to prevent debris from falling into the gloves.

Footwear
A heavy-duty boot or clog will serve you well come rain or shine. Something you can leave by the back door and slip on or off is ideal, and you can’t go wrong with a classic Hunter boot. High street favourite Toast do an equally excellent clog for when you can’t quite be bothered with a boot.
