It’s not just a one-time tourist stop, it’s where you go for spring blooms, Outlaw Field Summer Concert Series, fall colors, and Winter Garden aGlow lights. The Idaho Botanical Gardens are tucked right into the foothills near the Old Idaho Penitentiary, and it feels like a peaceful escape without being far from downtown Boise.

What to Expect at the Idaho Botanical Garden
The Idaho Botanical Garden features approximately 15 acres of cultivated gardens on a historic site near the Boise Foothills, with themed spaces, native Idaho plants, seasonal flowers, and shaded walking paths. It’s easy to explore at your own pace, and most people spend about 1–2 hours wandering through.

It’s walkable, manageable, and feels relaxed rather than overwhelming. In the summer, mornings and evenings are typically the most comfortable times to visit before peak heat.
Best Time to Visit
Spring and summer are when the Idaho Botanical Garden really shines. From April through early June, flowers are in bloom, and the foothills backdrop is bright green. In the summer, the gardens stay colorful while the evenings become ideal for events and concerts.
If you’re visiting during the summer in Boise, try to go earlier in the day or closer to sunset when temperatures are cooler. The evening light makes the garden especially beautiful.
Winter is when the Idaho Botanical Gardens does their big event, Winter Garden aGlow and that is also a special time to visit to see all of the lights in the garden.
Outlaw Field Concert Series
Outlaw Field is the outdoor concert venue located inside the Idaho Botanical Garden, and it’s one of the most popular summer event spaces in Boise. Each year, national and regional artists perform in this open-air amphitheater with the foothills as a backdrop.
Concert nights feel very “Boise summer” where people bring blankets or low chairs, grab food from vendors, and settle in for live music under outside! If you’re planning to attend an Outlaw Field concert, arrive early for parking (or ride your bike), and expect it to be one of the busier evenings at the garden. It’s such a fun time in Boise and always something I recommend that people do when they are visiting Boise in the summertime!

Held each winter, Winter Garden Aglow transforms the garden into a massive holiday light display. It’s one of the most popular winter events in Boise and draws visitors from across the Treasure Valley.
Gnome Event
Scarecrow Stroll and the Idaho “Boo”tanical Garden
These are fun activities to do during fall in Boise! The Scarecrow Stroll is a family friendly whimsical event with decorated scarecrows of all shapes, sizes and personalities across the garden.
The “Boo”tanical Garden is a one-month event in October where the garden has fall celebrations that are a little spooky, but really beautitiful. Some days you might find live music, food trucks, or seasonal drinks, while other days you might see scarecrows and spooky vibes! Perfect for the whole family, and there are different events going on on different days throughout the month.
Shade City Brew Fest
Shade City Brewfest typically happens in Boise’s springtime and it’s a craft beer, music and retro afternoon at the Idaho Botanical Garden.
Seasonal Workshops & Special Events
Throughout the year, the garden offers plant sales, educational programs, and special seasonal events. It’s worth checking their event calendar before visiting to see what’s happening during your trip.
