Neon lives on Main St.

The owners of The Grove Speakeasy went the extra mile to keep the historic neon sign. The neon sign evolved through past occupants of Hotel Penngrove: Kelly’s Bar, Black Cat, Mack’s and now The Grove. “We wanted to preserve the charm and character of the building, and the neon sign was a no-brainer for us,” said Jen Cusimano of The Grove. “It’s part of the story of the space and a visual anchor for the neighborhood. While there may have been less expensive options, none would have carried the same sense of history or personality.” Kudos to Johnston Sign Co. for the work. Another neon great is at the Twin Oaks Roadhouse. Come, take a look! To learn about the effort to preserve historic signage, Google the Petaluma Signs Project, led by historian Katherine J. Rinehart. The restoration of the neon chick sign is well underway in Petaluma.

Hatchery Road condo project update

The 87-unit condo development project at 220 Hatchery Rd. moved into its next step at county planning. The 16-building, three-story project is market-rate housing (not affordable housing) near Twin Oaks and the Penngrove Hatchery. The moment is now, folks. Learn more at the Penngrove Cares website, or enter permit number PLP25-0007 on the county’s permit website. Locals are concerned about dense housing in a rural area and the impacts on sewer, water and traffic.
