St. Patrick may have something to say about your early spring garden

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – First and foremost, before you read any further, make sure you know about the much more certain weather event coming by or before the end of the week: MUCH needed rounds of showers and thunderstorms that should bring at least some minor drought relief.

One Last Arctic Push Possible Near St. Patrick’s Day

As we approach mid-March, weather models are signaling a potential return of Arctic air to the Great Plains around St. Patrick’s Day. While there are clear signals in the data, the exact timing and intensity remain uncertain—which is why we’re monitoring this closely and will continue to refine the forecast as we get closer.

What the Models Are Showing

Multiple weather models with slightly different starting conditions are hinting at the possibility of cooler air moving into the region during the middle of the month. At this point, there’s roughly a 60/40 split between cooler and warmer outcomes across the ensemble of forecasts. This level of agreement is worth watching, but it’s also a reminder that significant changes could still occur as we get more data. In other words, odds are still about a coin-flip or slightly better.

What This Means for You

If you’re an avid gardener or planning spring planting, we recommend holding off on heavy gardening work for at least another couple of weeks. This is a prudent approach—every day in March has a historical record low below freezing, so a late freeze is not uncommon for our region.
