Spring is coming, and if you’re dreaming about a vegetable garden that’s also truly beautiful, this episode is for you. Before we jump into today’s repeat tour of one of my all-time favorite public gardens, I’m sharing details about my upcoming Hollister House webinar (March 5) — a special fundraiser event designed to help you plan an edible + elegant garden with fewer mistakes, less wasted money, and a smoother learning curve.

Then we head right back to Hollister House Garden in Connecticut, where every turn feels like a masterclass in structure, romance, and “chaos contained.” You’ll see how strong clipped forms (boxwood, yews, hedges) can coexist with lush, painterly planting… plus the small design decisions that make the entire property feel intentional, calm, and magical.

In this video, you’ll see

A charming parterre garden with dwarf boxwood + unforgettable foliage pairings

The power of variegation as “garden lighting” and color echo

Repetition done right: purple drifts, rhythmic focal points, and layered greens

A stunning reflecting pool / water garden moment (pure garden therapy)

“Try this at home” ideas you can adapt for Oklahoma, Texas, and beyond

Planting inspiration: spirea used low like groundcover, gravel gardening surprises, and smart structural backdrops

Behind-the-scenes context on Hollister House’s preservation + stewardship (and why this place matters)

  1. Lovely gardens at Hollister House. Will not be able to attend in March…live in Texas south of San Antonio. 🌱🪴🌱

  2. WOW!!! The quality of green there just blows me away. Loved the ‘cultivated wildness’ and the beautiful color combinations. Everything about this garden is just so inspiring, thank you for taking us on such a beautiful tour!❤🌿❤️

  3. This is so beautiful, inspiring, so many vistas, I am hoping to copy small "moments" in my garden. Thank you for sharing this garden again. I wish I could join you on March 5th, but my husband is having surgery. Have fun!

  4. Another great tour!

I recently saw a video on The Preppy Gardener (near Tulsa) in which the owner revealed his new potting shed and discussed plans to create gardens transitioning from the house to the shed. I thought it would be great to see Linda Vater touring this property. I left a comment and the creator responded that he is huge fan of yours and he'd love have you visit some day.

  5. Here in Pennsylvania many of the plants shown in this garden have been recently put on the Invasive list.
That spirea has definitely self seeded! My garden which was planed to "feed the birds & provide habitat" on the advise of WWF and local nurseries is now considered almost all Invasive 🙁
I am trying to shear back shrubs before they set seed and dig things out but as we age there is less energy and money to put toward the garden. I am heartsick that the legacy I had hoped to leave is now worthless. Please encourage everyone to consult local invasive lists before planting and to seek out native alternatives to imported species.

  6. I love Connecticut & the New England states. They have such great gardens & things they grown stay so crisp & fresh, unlike the south where thing’s literally cook too soon in the growing season.
(I just replaced my spirea with cryptomeria & transplanted the spirea to the back of a garden bed. Here in GA mine gets sparse & leggy, even after a good prune.)

  7. Absolutely stunning the second time around as well! Does anyone know what vine over the archway is at 13:50 in the video? It looks like a multicolored redbud leaf might, although different shape, but it appears to be a vine?

  8. She said "BEHOLD!" haha LOVE IT. Also only gardeners get so excited about gravel, but I am totally with you. I found a wonderful stone for the garden and was the only one in the house even remotely excited about it.

  9. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ so much beautiful flowers to look at hon I full joy the tour very much thank you so much,we have so much to praise God for and give him thanks for all the beautiful plants. The garden is well designed am so sorry the founder lost his voice we couldn’t hear from him but we hear a little from his beautiful wife.thanks again for the tour aunt Linda..🎉🎉🎉🎉…

  10. I watch your videos a lot from your last house. So inspiring and beautiful. I know it was a lot of work, but I really miss it 😢

  11. So remarkable, and with so many areas structurally carved using both hardscape or landscape, with plant materials that navigate the seasons apparently. I want to celebrate those who care for this beauty and bless those who developed it! Thank you for sharing and exploring!! KUDOS TO SO MANY, From Southeast Tennessee.
