Hi all planted these lilly pillows a few months ago, one decided to kill itself. Unsure why? Prehaps it doesnt want to spend the rest of its life in ipswich 🤣.

Any ideas?

I’ve been in landscaping for 30 years. Occasionally that happens. There is no definite reason.

Those fences can concentrate heat and burn out a plant really quickly while they are establishing

Agreeing with previous commenter – lilly pilly just crap out sometimes soon after planting. Chuck another in, and you’ll be fine.

Could be too close to the concrete poured for the fence post.

The dead leaves don’t look like lilli pili , they look like a succulent , edit , ah it’s the one behind , , just one of those things I expect

It’s not necessarily a lilli pilli thing, tho they are more sensitive to drying out. This could’ve happened to any plant purchase. Expect some to die, either transplant stress, disease or just that plant didn’t have an ideal nursery upbringing.

planting a hedge like this, it’s wise to choose a species and cultivar you can easily source mature replacements or buy a few extra to replace losses.

Trust me it’s worse if it did this in 3-5years time, obtaining super mature stock that matched several years later to fill a gap in a 2-3m high hedge is much more pain.
