Garden beds have been refreshed and left for about 2 weeks. Went to start planting and saw this….stuff? What is it and what do I do?

Nuke the fucking thing from orbit.

I would spray that with domestic bug spray and monitor.

Looks like fungus gnats to me. I’d recommend you look at diatomaceous earth (fossilised kelp, it’s really cheap to get a like a kilo of it). It is a non toxic molecular irritant that will effectively kill any insects in your soil. It’s best applied by mixing a *small* quantity of top soil with it then spreading that as top soil and then re-mulching. Don’t do this after watering, and don’t water immediately after.

I’d especially recommend this if this is an indoor plant or a plant that you use things like fertilisers on.

Just be sure to not breathe it in as your mixing/applying. A simple COVID mask will do the trick, or if you’ve got them a proper particle mask.

Springtails. Generally considered beneficial to garden/soil health.
