Four weeks ago, Wilson Landscapes offered to transform a local home’s garden for free in order to change the residents’ lives for the better.

The team received more than 120 submissions after the Adver helped spread the word about this generous initiative, and a winner has now been chosen.

They met several families and heard many deeply moving stories that have stayed with them, though nine-year-old Ada’s story stood out as she has a particularly unusual type of the neurological condition known as leukodystrophy, which is thought to only affect 10 people in the entire world.

The bright and determined youngster was born on September 2, 2016, alongside her twin brother, Alfred Minton.

She appeared healthy at first, but within weeks, she struggled to feed, was constantly sick, and seemed in ongoing discomfort. After multiple hospital visits and extensive testing, she underwent throat surgery for laryngomalacia, which helped improve her feeding.

Further investigations eventually led to a diagnosis of leukodystrophy, which affects the brain’s white matter and impacts mobility and muscle control.

Because so little is known about her condition, her long-term prognosis remains uncertain.

As a result of her illness, Ada has very low muscle tone and is unable to walk independently.

She requires round-the-clock care and support with daily living. Wilson Landscapes explained on social media that despite her physical challenges, Ada is “incredibly resilient” and has “a wonderful understanding of the world around her, loves school, and approaches life with positivity and determination”.

Ada’s twin brother Alfred is a devoted and caring sibling, and their family works tirelessly every day to ensure both children have the best possible childhood filled with love, joy and opportunity.

As for the reason for the garden transformation, the company’s spokesperson added: “As Ada grows, her physical needs are increasing.

“The family have moved to a bungalow to create a fully accessible home environment, including adaptations such as an accessible bedroom and wet room.

“They are now seeking support to improve outdoor access, allowing Ada to safely enjoy her garden – something that brings her immense joy and plays a vital role in her wellbeing.

“Any support towards making this space accessible would have a lasting and meaningful impact on Ada’s quality of life.

“Together, we can make something truly special happen for this wonderful family.”

The project is expected to start on April 13 and aims to fit three weeks’ worth of work into four days.

Any traders or suppliers who would like to help with this ambitious project should contact Wilson Landscapes Ltd on Facebook or 07473 326078.

Loran Minton replied: “We are truly touched and overwhelmed to have been chosen! We still can’t quite believe it!

“Thank you so much, this means so much to us.”

Wilson Landscapes hopes that this will also help raise awareness of leukodystrophy and help Ada’s family find answers to their questions about it.

As a way of giving back to other local families in need, everyone who submitted a bid for the garden makeover will receive 25 per cent off any project they want Wilson Landscapes to carry out.

The spokesperson added: “To every family who shared their story with us – please know this decision was incredibly difficult.

“We would have loved to transform every single one of your gardens.

“Your strength, honesty and love for your families moved us deeply, and choosing just one was heartbreaking.”

“[The discount] will never truly match what you deserve, but we hope it shows just how much your courage and openness meant to us.”
