A lush, green lawn doesn’t happen by chance; it’s all about timing and the right care. One simple task performed now can set your grass up to thrive through spring and summer. It’s quick, easy, and can make a dramatic difference to the health of your garden.
Garden experts at Meadow Mania urged homeowners to start their lawn care now. They explained: “As the sun comes out and we start to shake off the winter chill, it’s time to give your lawn a little love and attention to prepare it for the vibrant growth of spring.
“March is the perfect month to begin your lawn care routine — after all, a healthy, thriving lawn is the foundation for a beautiful garden.”
How to get a green and healthy lawn
The experts urged beginning with “gentle tasks”, and surprisingly, mowing is one of them. March is not too early to start mowing, if the conditions are right.
Gardeners should consider weather conditions, grass growth and the overall condition of your lawn. “Mowing should ideally be done when the grass is dry, and the weather is mild, as grass begins to grow when temperatures rise above 5°C,” according to agricultural and groundcore dealer George Browns.
If all requirements are met, the lawn experts at Meadow Mania urge you to set your mower higher than usual to encourage slow, healthy growth without stressing the grass. Avoid trimming too low, as the emerging blades still need protection as they recover from winter dormancy.
Other gardening tasks to do now
The expert shared: “First things first, take a good look at your lawn. After the winter winds and rain, it might be a bit cluttered with leaves, twigs, and other debris.
“Grab your rake and clear everything from the lawn—this will allow your grass to breathe and grow without any obstructions. Plus, clearing the debris helps prevent mould and fungal issues from developing over time.”
They also suggest managing weed control, moss control, doing aeration and scarification, a spring lawn feed, and overseeding.
