In this video, I walk you through my process for preparing potatoes for planting. I talk through the soil amendments I use and show how I incorporate them into the soil to set the plants up for success.

This year, I’m growing potatoes two different ways – in 45-gallon grow bags and, in the ground, – so you can see how I prep for both methods before anything goes in the soil.

This isn’t a shortcut or a magic formula, just the simple prep work that helps potatoes get off to a strong start.

If you’re getting ready to plant potatoes this season, I hope this gives you a clear, practical look at how I do it here on the homestead.

  1. did potatoes for the first time last year…reds and golds. got 15 pounds from one 10 foot row. Expanding this year. They are fun to grow.

  2. Hello love your channel just FYI a large segment of African American people have Viking/Scandinavian blood because of the transatlantic slave trade I only know because we did our ancestry and learned that tidbit

  3. The way to plant potatoes depends on whether they're determinate or indeterminate.
This year I'm growing them whole. Some in the ground and some in containers.

  4. I’m trying to keep up. I just took my potatoes out of the pantry and cut them in half to scab over for planting 👍🏽

  5. Yes. I will be growing both standard potatoes and sweet potatoes this year.

I planted my first crop of sweet potatoes (Murasaki) last year in grow bags.

I got busy, and the frost hit 48 hours before I was able to attempt to harvest. The frost can ruin a sweet potato harvest, so I documented everything on my channel. 😮😮😮

I was able to catch the often-sold-out Nancy Hall potatoes this year. I'm super excited about all of the potatoes I will plant in grow bags.

  6. You were right, Daniel! It's "eyes are", not "eyes is". The verb matches the subject, not the prepositional phrase ("on a potato"). Sorry, that's just a pet peeve of mine! 😂 I had just a couple of small potatoes that I threw whole into a fabric grow bag. We'll see how they do. I love watching potato harvests, and I can't wait to see yours in a few months!🥔

  7. Dropping in on you brother. I don't think I'm going to plant snap peas this year. This weather is just too unstable. Going to be checking in to see how they do. 2026 🤛🏽

  8. Thanksfor sharing!I will soon be planting my potatoes. I didn't think to cute my potatoes in half.Great video and I did hyped this video.

  9. That's a lot of awesomeness and you should check out my potatoe video I'm a new gardener I think they are ready to be planted though ❤😊

  10. I got my potato from HOSS. This is my first time I am doing in ground and in a grow bag.
Remember this is my first time for everything.
    Well Mr. Viking great video

  11. I cut my potatoes last week, and am planting them today! Nice to meet a Viking! I'm friends with a Viking now! Great to meet you!😂😂❤❤🎉🎉

  12. Semper Fi brother! I’m a disabled vet who’s been gardening, regular decorative plants and looking into getting into some gardening veggies more now that I have the time and I came across your channel yesterday. Love the content and you are fun to listen too, thanks a lot and thank you for your service as well !!!

  13. First imma need some of those eggs. I've never heard of any of those potatoes. But, it's good to know. Now we gotta start calling you Viking Salty Dawg 😂😂

  14. Just filled 12 grow bags.
3 will be carrots and the rest will be potatoes- not sure what type- I just got a few bags of organic from Trader Joe’s…
    We’ll see how that goes!!
    Thanks- love your videos brother!

  15. I will be growing potatoes for the first time ever!!!’n I’m using grow bags, tooo. Thanks. You’re really funny…..Viking 😂😂😂😂

  16. Hey. I got a question. That’s a big grow bag. What’s the smallest size I can use? I got a set of six 20 gallon ones in my Amazon cart. Should I get Bigger ones ?

  17. Hey! Same line, I suppose, we call proper potatoes Irish potatoes, all of em, and then there are sweet potatoes.

  18. 11:09 thanks for spelling lol being country hill and heal sound the same. Used to confuse me at first.

  19. I'm going to experiment with mixed soil in bags. My basket method yielded very small harvest last year. Thank you for the great information.

  20. Salty, fellow veteran here. I’ve watched almost ALL your videos because they are relatable. I don’t care for all those big commercialized growers who are into gardening for the money and have lost track of the joys of gardening. I will be sad if you stop and will miss your content, but I understand.

I got into gardening while in the army to relieve stress and has been hooked ever since. I know people say hurtful things and don’t have the empathy to realize how it impacts the other person. I would feel the same way you are feeling and because I’m probably weaker than you are, I would quit. So, regardless of what you decide to do, know that you have a Corps size group of supporters who love you.

  21. Just a dabble gardener here. It was always interesting to see if I’m going to get potatoes or sunflowers. The kids would get inspired by my planting, follow behind later with their sunflowers seeds in the same spots.

  22. You make me laugh, a Viking Only parking sign. 🤣🤣🤣 I am growing two kinds of potatoes and sweet potatoes from GrowHoss in raised beds. My first time growing potatoes, so thank you for explaining about how to chit potatoes. Thank you also for explaining how to plant them. Peace my friend.

  23. 73 here and my style of gardening has surely changed through the years! Raised beds and shorter bursts of working are normal now. I just have to listen to the body and stop when needed. Just keep on moving and doing. It all adds up and I enjoy the garden so much. Love your content. Thank you.

  24. I feel like i have a final destination moment more and more as i get older. Ifykyk
