I got 100% germination with my luffa seeds. This photo is 5 days after starting. They are in 4 cell, kinda deep pots in happy frog soil.

After they get their first or second set of true leaves I want to repot, I’m aiming for a Mother’s Day planting date.

Should I repot to a larger pot, I’m looking at some 8” cheap pots from Lowe’s. Then later into grow bags when it’s time to go outside.

Or, should I just repot them directly into the grow bags to get any transplant shock out of the way while it’s still indoors? Will make it a bit harder to move around and such but might be worth it?

Follow up question, what size grow bag? I was thinking 15 gallon, but wondering if I should go larger.

TIA!

You started these *way* too early if your goal is to put them out in May.

You should start them about 2 weeks before you plan to put them outside. They really don’t like to be transplanted, but getting them started inside is usually okay… if you don’t do it 3 months before you want to plant them.

  2. I would put in the big pots sooner rather than later because they get big very quickly. Then harden off gently – I found mine will stall a bit during hardening off but then in later summer they will take off like a rocket. They will definitely need trellising.

Also be prepared you are going to get a LOT. I had two plants last year on cow trellis and had maybe 40 or 50 luffas.
