Gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh has shared his essential tips for achieving a lusher lawn. With March just days away and spring on the horizon, countless homeowners will be preparing to revitalise their gardens ahead of milder conditions, including restoring their lawns following a harsh, damp winter.

Alan Titchmarsh, renowned for his appearances on beloved television programmes Ground Force and Love Your Garden, consistently provides his 97,000 YouTube followers with diverse gardening material. His channel, Gardening With Alan Titchmarsh, covers a range of topics, from encouraging wildlife into your outdoor space to selecting the ‘best’ indoor plants.

Among his most popular uploads is one entitled: “My 3-Step Fix for a Greener Lawn (Moss, Edges and Bald Patches Sorted!)” In this video, Alan Titchmarsh outlines the steps to achieve a “greener and sharper” lawn appearance, particularly in spring and summer, reports Devon Live.

In the description, he stated: “I’m not obsessed with having the perfect lawn, but like most garden owners, I like to make sure my grass is looking its best as spring turns to summer. Treating and mowing your lawn is one way to improve the look of it, but I always carry out some simple additional measures to get it looking greener and sharper!”

The television personality and horticultural writer says just five items are required. He stated: “All you need is an edging tool, a good rake, some top soil, the right grass seed and a hose.”

Alan Titchmarsh’s three-step fix for a greener lawn

In the video, the expert gardener illustrates:

Dethatching to remove moss and enable grass to thrive. How to use an edging tool and hose to give your lawn that crisp, professional look.Over-seeding to turn unsightly bare patches into new areas of grass.

Alan Titchmarsh shared in the video that the compost he used to demontrate was by Melcourt, the tools were from Spear and Jackson and the grass seed is by Fothergills. He also shared that the hose is from Gardena.

Dethatching, also known as scarifying, helps remove moss from a lawn and is an effective way to enhance grass growth. Moss thrives in areas where grass struggles to grow, such as compacted soil, overly shaded areas, or damp, waterlogged spots. It can rapidly smother the grass, inhibiting its growth.

Moss creates a dense, soft layer that obstructs water, air, and fertilisers from penetrating the soil, thus the grass roots are unable to access what they need. Removing it allows these vital elements to penetrate deeper.

Once the moss is eliminated, the grass can utilise nutrients and sunlight more effectively, resulting in a denser, greener, healthier lawn. Scarifying is often advised in early spring (March-April) or early autumn (September), when the grass is growing robustly but isn’t suffering from excessive heat or dryness.

Alan Titchmarsh recommends using an edging tool alongside a garden hose to create straight lines for achieving a tidy, professional, well-maintained lawn. A sharp, clearly defined edge provides a neat, orderly separation between the grass and flower beds, pathways, or driveways, enhancing the overall appearance of the garden.

Overseeding is a ‘handy’ technique to transform bare patches into lush, green grass, according to the gardener. By introducing new, high-quality grass seed to these areas, you can repair damage caused by pets, heavy footfall, or dry weather, and make your lawn denser and healthier.
