Dark foliage is where contrast meets confidence. These rich, dramatic plants bring depth, structure, and serious visual punch to garden beds and containers, making every surrounding color look brighter and more intentional. In this video, Heidi walks through how to style deep-toned plants for maximum impact — from statement containers to layered landscape designs — and how to pair them for that elevated, designer look. If you love gardens with dimension and personality, this one’s for you. Explore our collection at GardenCrossings.com — we ship nationwide, or visit us in Zeeland, Michigan this spring.

  1. I agree, great video! My favorite dark foliage plant is Heliopsis Bleeding Hearts. And the rabbits love it too 😮

  2. I love sedum so I had to have some back and black, midnight velvet (purchased at Garden Crossings online), and plum dazzled. Thanks to watching your tours, I paired the BnB with Serendipity Allium (behind it) and Pink Diamonds Dicentra in front. This will be the first year with the dicentra in front but I just had to have more of it as I LOVE how long it blooms. May have to swap them out for the white diamonds if the pink clashes. Regardless, I couldn’t agree more with your recommendations on that plant. Plum dazzled sedum might be my favorite of all because it’s smaller and can easily tuck in the front of the border. Last year I had Denim n LaceRussian Sage behind it and annuals Campfire marshmallow bidens nearby. I’m in the northeast and chomping at the bit for Spring blooms!

  3. Hi Heidi 🌺. Dark colors combined with light colors create a charming garden. I have a smoke bush in front of the Italian cypress. I also have a barberry shrub in front of the thuja, a Breynia nivosa 'Roseapicta' shrub, and a crapemyrtle black diamond. Have a wonderful day! 🌺🌻🌷🌻🌺

  4. Hello, Black Lace Elderberry is my fav. I preordered the Newly Noir from you all to place in a planter with pink mini vista petunia also preordered. Itching for Spring..Thank You

  5. Another great and informative video, Heidi! My favorite is the Eclipse hydrangea. We have a native fern that pops up next to it in the spring that provides a wonderful texture and color contrast that really makes the Eclipse stand out!
