Hey all! First off, much love to this community! Tons of great information and advice is shared on this sub and I am very appreciative of it.

I am picking up a couple of trees from Austin Tree Folks (amazing organization) for my duplex in southwest Austin; a cedar elm and a lacey oak. The two units (Unit A and Unit B) have separate backyards. Each yard is:

  • 38’ deep (house to back fence, east-facing)
  • 26’ wide (dividing fence to boundary fence)

My plan is to plant the cedar elm in the backyard of unit A and the lacey oak in the backyard of unit b to provide some shade and privacy.

I've done some reading on this sub and online about placement but wanted to solicit some additional feedback before I plant them next weekend.

Goals:

  • Avoid future root/fence conflicts
  • Avoid canopy crowding between trees

Any feedback on the proposed placement would be greatly appreciated!

Seems fine, depending on the existing tree. Neither are supposed to have many surface roots so I don’t foresee an issue with the fence either. Eventually the canopies may touch but it’ll be pretty far down the road.

Are there any power lines running along the back fence? If yes, be sure to plant so limbs do not grow in or around the lines.
