Gardening legend Alan Titchmarsh has shared his top tips and best advice for a greener lawn. With March only a matter of days away and spring arriving soon, many people will be looking to spruce up their gardens in time for the warmer weather, including bringing their lawns back to life after a cold, wet winter.
Alan Titchmarsh, famously known for his work on popular TV shows Ground Force and Love Your Garden, regularly updates his 97k YouTube subscribers with a variety of gardening content. His channel, Gardening With Alan Titchmarsh, covers a wide range of topics, from attracting birds to your garden to identifying the ‘best’ houseplants.
One of his most viewed videos is titled: “My 3-Step Fix for a Greener Lawn (Moss, Edges & Bald Patches Sorted!)” In the video, Alan Titchmarsh explains the steps to take for a “greener and sharper” looking lawn, especially for spring and summer.
In the caption, he said: “I’m not obsessed with having the perfect lawn, but like most garden owners, I like to make sure my grass is looking its best as spring turns to summer. Treating and mowing your lawn is one way to improve the look of it, but I always carry out some simple additional measures to get it looking greener and sharper!”
The TV star and horticultural journalist says you only need five items. He explained: “All you need is an edging tool, a good rake, some top soil, the right grass seed and a hose.”

Dethatching, also called scarifying, helps remove moss from a lawn and is an effective way to improve grass growth. Moss grows well in places where grass struggles, like compacted soil, too much shade, or wet, soggy spots. It can cover the grass really fast, stopping it from growing.
Moss forms a thick, soft layer that prevents water, air, and fertilisers from reaching the soil, so the grass roots can’t get what they need. Taking it out lets these important things go deeper. After the moss is removed, the grass can better use nutrients and sunlight, leading to a thicker, greener, healthier lawn. It is often recommended to scarify in early spring (March-April) or early autumn (September), when the grass is growing well but not suffering from too much heat or dryness.

Alan Titchmarsh says using an edging tool with a garden hose to create straight lines is the best way to achieve a neat, professional, well-kept lawn. A sharp, clearly defined edge creates a distinct, tidy separation between the grass and flower beds, walkways, or driveways, making the whole garden look much more cared for.
Overseeding is a ‘handy’ way to turn bare spots into lush, green grass, the gardener says. By adding new, high-quality grass seed to these spots, you can fix damage from pets, heavy foot traffic, or dry weather, and make your lawn thicker and healthier.
