The Longhorns captured their first Area Championship in three years as other Permian Basin teams saw their season come to an end.
MIDLAND, Texas — Buena Vista boy’s basketball keeps its season alive in the Class 1A Division I State Tournament as the Longhorns advance to the Regional Semifinals with a 46-33 victory over Garden City Thursday at Midland Christian’s McGraw Events Center.
It’s Buena Vista’s first Area Championship in three years, while the Bearkats falls in the Area round for the first time in four years. Garden City finishes the season with a 15-18 record.
Caden Valdez finished with a team-high 13 points for the Longhorns, while Alexander Porras added 10 points. Jacob Talamantes dropped a game-high 14 points to lead the Bearkats.
After a tight first quarter with a two-point margin, Buena Vista pulled away from Garden City by outscoring it 22-8 over the next two quarters. The Longhorns improve to 23-5 on the season as they face the winner of Westbrook and Munday in the Regional Semifinals either Monday, Mar. 2 or Tuesday, Mar. 3 with time and location TBD.
However, Buena Vista is the only Permian Basin team to win the first night of the Area Round as here are scores from other West Texas games.
