With natives! Make sure to use an edge against your neighbours grass, I quite like corten edging as it gives a decent, hard line. I’m not sure where you’re located but I always recommend local species and visiting a local native nursery. This will also help you ascertain your soil type and what needs to be done to correct it. I would not be planting anything until you have worked this part out. Your soil looks to be quite sandy but I would always recommend mixing through a few bags of soil improver in and as deep as you can manage.
I think a couple of taller plants to give depth and height to the garden, such as a grevillea. Something that gets 2-3 meters tall. I would then add a couple of smaller, shrubby natives and then ground covers. I like the mix of silver foliage (think eremorphila) amongst the greens, it’s a nice ornamental touch.
Firstly, I’d check all the rules and reg’s via your Council. I was so surprised at how locked down ours was. They provide a list of plants you can ONLY use. Heights specified. Landscaping materials allowed etc. Perhaps there is different. I got all my hopes up for really going for it, only to be kinda shot down in flames 🤯
