The French edition of Georgi Gospodinov’s novel Death and The Gardener, translated by Marie Vrinat‑Nikolov and published by Gallimard, has been shortlisted for the Jean Monnet Prize for European Literature, the author said on his Facebook page. It will compete “in friendly rivalry with books by wonderful writers such as Daniel Kehlmann, Jenny Erpenbeck and Andrea Bajani, among others,” Gospodinov said.

Established in 1995, the Jean Monnet Prize for European Literature continues, year after year, its work of highlighting the continent’s writing. Supported and funded by the Departmental Council of Charente, this prize recognizes a European work, translated or written in French, published during the previous year, ActuaLitte reported.

The most recent winners of the Jean Monnet Prize for European Literature are Amelie Nothomb (2023), Ian McEwan (2024) and Pascal Quignard (2025).

This year the jury chose eight works.

Death and The Gardener was selected among the ten most important novels of 2025 in a ranking published by Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
