RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Reptile Gardens has posted a public update to Facebook following a fire in late November that killed more than 100 of its animals.

The fire started in the southwest corner of one of their detached animal habitats. The official cause of the fire was undetermined electrical. Terry Phillip, a Curator for the animal department, said that due to the nature of the fire and the building’s eventual collapse, that is all the information they have on what happened.

Phillip explained they are dedicated to a “quality family experience” with the announcement of a new group of alligators coming from eastern Texas. They are also planning to rebuild their tortoise habitat with improvements, and visitors can expect two new baby tortoises who’s eggs were laid prior to the fire.
