A ‘brazen’ burglar who stole war medals, tablets and precious jewellery in a sickening crime spree was snared by a gardening glove he left behind at a house, police said.

DNA recovered from the glove matched that of Macorley Collins, 27, who’s now starting a prison sentence.

Police chiefs in Stockport said he broke into homes during the day – and showed ‘a clear disregard for people and their property’.

Collins, of Appleby Close in Adswood, Stockport, pleaded guilty to 10 offences he committed between September and December last year.

At Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court on Tuesday, he was jailed for 32 months.

In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said he ‘mainly targeted vulnerable and elderly people’s properties during the daytime’ in and around Stockport.

The force said he targeted the home of a woman as she took a walk in his first break-in, taking medication she relied on as well as pearl earrings, gold pendants and broaches. The total value was estimated at around £3,000.

In subsequent burglaries, Collins took items including a Playstation 5, a Rolex watch, a Platinum ring, two golden watches and a mountain bike worth £3,800.

A GMP spokesperson said: “In one of his last burglaries, Collins took several First World War medals and a military OBE.

“During one of the December burglaries, a gardening-style glove was located in the middle of the garden and after being forensically seized and examined, DNA was obtained which produced a match to Collins. He was subsequently arrested and investigative work mapped him to several of the locations at the time of the burglaries.

“He was later charged with four of them, with a further six taken into consideration at sentencing, after Collins admitted to them.”

PC Lucy Ward, from GMP’s Stockport district, said: “Collins committed multiple burglaries in the Stockport area, helping himself to everything from expensive jewellery to family heirlooms. His brazen tactics of operating during the daytime show a clear disregard for people and their property.

“Following a thorough investigation, involving the DNA retrieval of a glove left at the scene by Collins, he admitted guilt and was charged with burglary offences.

“People should be able to feel safe within their own homes, and we will always investigate burglaries when they come into us. If you have any information or concerns about burglaries in your area, please do get in touch with us.”
