Holes are up to 8″ deep and 3-4″ wide. There are 10 to 15 of them in a 15′ square of my front yard.

Armadillo. You have some good grubs in your yard. I have a family of armadillos living under my shed in the yard.

Squirrels, most likely.
There are tons of harmless deterrents that are moderately effective against squirrels, but all have to be reapplied with some regularity: pepper spray/cayenne powder (of various sorts), vinegar, peppermint oil, etcetera.
Stopping them may be a constant struggle, or it may be a waste of time.
Squirrels do what they do, and we live in their environment, not the other way around. So, try to make peace with them.
