ID/ Care request. I inherited this cactus and it’s been wilting at the top. I loosened up some of the soil (compacted sand) and very gently watered after removing the rot at the top. I know the plant is old, but due to a pretty substantial reverse taper it hasn’t been able to stand under its own support since I got it. This makes me want to prop the whole thing, or at least a couple of more manageable sections.

If that photo is accurate to where the cactus generally lives, it’s not getting enough light. I’ve never had success with cactus or succulents indoors by a window, let alone indoors far from a window. If you want to keep it there, you need to get a crazy strong grow light, otherwise keep it outdoors and let it get blasted by the sun after some acclimation. You can water it almost never; underwatering is rarely an issue with cactus.
If you’re struggling due to the height of the cactus, your instinct to chop and prop is a good one. But it still needs a lot of light and rarely water.
