Take a walk back in time and explore old garden features that vanished from American homes. From classic backyard structures to practical planting setups, many once-common outdoor elements have slowly disappeared as lifestyles, neighborhoods, and design trends changed.
These gardens weren’t just decorative—they were functional, social, and often essential to everyday life. Families grew food, gathered outside, and built spaces that reflected a slower, more hands-on way of living. Over time, modern landscaping, smaller yards, and changing priorities pushed many of these charming features into history.
If you love vintage home design, backyard nostalgia, and discovering how American homes used to look and function, this journey into forgotten garden traditions will bring back a piece of the past. 🌿

Wow
My grandfather had a massive rhubarb patch behind his shed that seemed to grow forever. Today, we just buy frozen stalks at the supermarket that have no flavor at all.
To keep onions and garlic longer these days, you dint need to braid them. Wash a pair of old tights abd give them a final rinse in vinegar. Once dry cut the legs off and put 1 onion in, tie a knit and add the next onion till you have a 'leg full'. Keep each leg away from the other abd hang them in a cool 'airy' place abd you'll find you can keep them FAR longer than any other way.
I got this idea from my parents, who were told it from their parents and its a way of using old tights that 1 leg has a hole in so saving you a little money and waste.
I also grew up with pit barbecues, digging a trench in the garden and putting river stones (as big as possible) in the base. Setting up a deep layer of wood and lighting it. Let it burn till there are just embers left. Then my oarents put on a thick layer of 'outer layers' of veg, cabbage, greens from cauliflower & broccoli, banana skins, Brussel sprouts even old, uneaten celery etc. Wrap the meat veg and fruits you want to cook with any seasoning you want and layer in it, meat first, then root veg, last to go on was fruit. Cover the whole pit with another 'moist' layer and let the heat of the embers and stones cook everything for 3-4hrs. It's yummy. They even did putting the food, well packed with protection under bonfires, but that was generally quick cooking chicken portions and potatoes, parsnips and carrots. Though they would also add in things like squashes and marrows with garlic and onions to roast for soup the next day. It made the best veg soup out.
My Dad had asparagus bed in our old house, he loved the spears I only loved the summer ferns for the house 😊
As for watering your plants, if you use old fashioned bar soap you can use the left over water to water your plants and it also helps keep aphids away as soap breaks down their oily skin and helps to stop them breathing.
yes I'm back!
