I would welcome any suggestions on helping this thing live. This spring will be two years in the ground.

    I would leave that one. Spray trunk for flatheaded borers (check your local extension for timing) and wrap the trunk next fall.

    I would also plant another white oak. Follow up with better after care (deep root watering 2-3x wk for 3 years) and wrap trunk in the fall to protect from SW winter injury.

    Get back to us in 3 years and share your experiment.

  2. Two things I have learned from this sub so far: it’s buried too deep and sun damage is preventing the bark from healing. The way it is splitting is new to my rookie eyes but my gut says it would be easier to start over than the effort of trying to save it.
