SEYMOUR — The Seymour Farmers Market will be offering a number of free gardening classes once again at the Williams Family Seymour Branch Library in March and April.
The classes will be offered on Thursdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the community room of the library.
MARCH 5Starting Small
Our first class is for anyone who is just wanting to try gardening, or maybe has limited space. We will talk about how to grow in a pot, a bucket, a small bin or build a 2’x4’ bed. Considerations for what kind of container, where to get one, and how to fill it depend a lot on what you want to grow. We will talk about the size of root systems for some common vegetables and their dietary and environmental needs. You too can grow your own homegrown tomato, or lettuce for your salad or just some flowers to brighten your day.
MARCH 19Organic Gardening
Opportunities that we have learned from — organic gardening brings its challenges and requires thinking outside of the traditional chemical fertilizer/bug spray box. Join our vendors Bonnie Young and Shawn Chapman as they share some of the lessons they have learned by doing. They will address promoting plant health and fostering natural resistance to pests and disease. These ladies bring amazing produce to our market, so I know they have great secrets to share.
APRIL 9Collecting Rainwater for your garden
Our last class this Spring. Rainwater is the favorite drink of plants and it is free! Learn how to put together ways to collect rainwater and store it to irrigate your plants. Jim Mongold is experienced in setting up and using low tech water collection systems on his farm.
