This year, I’m focusing on efficient vertical gardening in my garden, especially for tomatoes and cucumbers. After trying various methods that didn’t work, I’m excited to share the trellising tomatoes and how to trellis cucumbers systems that actually perform well. These garden trellises will help maximize space and yield, offering practical gardening tips for all.

  1. Tried the florida weave for tomatoes last year.
Better than cages, for sure, but not as good as a single line run overhead.
Little slipknot at the top and bury the other end under the plant during transplanting.
Let out a little from the knot, wrap, and lean.

    Edit: i use sisal rope

  2. If you want to be cheap, you use T-Posts every 6'. You apply a tight top and bottom rope/cable that's pulled tight and secured to the lawn with a peg. Every 1 foot, you add doubled up twine for added security top top and bottom lines. When you plant your tomatoes keep it indeterminate varieties and line them up with the twine. As they grow take the suckers first and wrap the plant around the string. You can use trellis clips that hug the twine.

By far the best for cheap otherwise large posts are going to be your winner, anything 8-12ft tall above ground or what you feel works for you and your season. Same concept as above just more commercialized.

  3. I HATE trellis. Used it all the time in MI for cannabis. We would trellis over the plant and run the stalks/stems through the trellis upwards towards our lights. It was always my least favorite part of growing.

  4. We have what we call trash trees on our little ¼-acre property. Elms and honey locust. I let them grow until the trunks are a couple of inches thick and then cut them at the soil line and strip them to poles. I plant each tomato plant with a wood pole in its hole, shoved deeper into the soil, obviously. Honey locust works best because it hardens really solidly. So I use the elm for grid trellises, stripping the bark to use as my ties for each joint. Works great! I can't afford all the fancy stuff yet. 😊
