Good info, thanks!
I agree with you on the pill bugs, they’ve eaten a lot of my seedlings and very small plants. I’m going to try growing my zucchini on trellises.
No cats outdoors at all please. If you don’t care about extincting wildlife, do it for the cats: they live shorter lives, as a prey species they experience measurably higher stress (unhealthy cortisol levels) and of course they are likelier to die violent deaths outside. Show compassion please. Cats in always.
Having cultivated isopods for a year now both in terraria and wild colonies in some of my pots, I can absolutely confirm they'll eat soft plant bits. I tossed some cantaloupe waste with seeds in one of my pots to feed them, and when some sprouted, I watched as they nibbled the leaves off. I've seen them eat other fresh vegetation too like pepper leaves.
I discovered the snail method of seed starting but someone took it to the next level putting it inside a winter sown jug they are calling it a snug. So easy to pull out and unroll and transplant. I also did not want to have a bunch of jugs laying around for the other seasons when not in use so I cut the bottoms off and labeled the bottom to match the tops. Now my jugs can stack together easily inside each other for a lot less space to take up. I am also going to implement no transplant winter sow jugs right into the spot where I want certain plants.
Rollie Pollies focus in soils that are high in heavy metals…natures de-heavy metal your soil! ❤️
QUESTION: CAN YOU USE ALUMINUM FOIL TO DEFLECT ROLY POLYS??
Love the tip on using milk jugs for starting seeds. I needed to start Skerrit. Needs cold stiration Florida 9B we had some hard freezing weather this January beginning of February. They germinated are thriving. Thank you so much. Skerrit can be persnikety sometimes.
I have no idea why there would be controversy for anyone who tries the zucchetta trombomcino – I have grown this vertically for years, in many gardens as we were stationed around the world – it is absolutely easier and more productive. They only have seeds in the bulb part – so, seedless zucchini for that long neck. Cures better for winter than many other winter squash- I’ve kept the cured ones till new zucchini are being produced the next year.
No3 so true
Actually useful info
Congratulations! Very good and usefull advices! Thank you❤
OK…I have to tell you about my gardening journey with wood chips. I joined a group online called Gardenweb back in the late 2000's and a person by the screen name of Al (not A.I.)/Tapla was always talking about a soil mix he used called a 5-1-1 mix, which is 5 parts pine bark fines, 1 part perlite and 1 part peat (with a small amount of lime – optional ingredient for me). He talked about all the plants you can grow in this type of mix, including tomatoes, peppers, etc… I started using this mix for my tomatoes and peppers back in the early 2010's and it actually works! You have to stay on top of watering/fertilizing (especially dealing with the TX heat), but plants grow fast and thrive with big harvests with this mix. Because some people needed something a bit more water-retentive, Al/Tapla suggested doubling the peat part of the mix, making it a 5-2-1. He also had a gritty mix using pumice that worked well for potting trees and perennial plants. Last year I did an experiment with radishes – just planting them straight into the mix to see if they would germinate and grow—and they did!!! I grow in containers, and the 5-2-1 mix worked well when I grew sweet potatoes, so learning that just wood chips can work too means I can save money on the perlite and peat/potting soil part of that mix! Thx so much for sharing this! 😁👍
Foil works for slugs too.
I enjoy your channel very much, There are a flood of AI gardening video's on here and I do prefer when I am watching someone real sharing their experiences in a real way rather then something that is whatever it is. Well done thank you for what you share with us all.
I always grow easy annual flowers around the garden to attract pollinators— zinnias, cosmos, etc.
HI MY SOIL TYPE IS VERY LIGHT AND SANDY I HAVE IMPROVED THE SOIL STRUTURE BY DIGGING IN TORN UP STRIPS OF NEWPAPER AND BROWN CARDBOARD PACKAGING ( REMOVE ANY PLASTIC TAPE ) BEFORE SOAKING AND BURYING 4- 6 INCHES OF SOAKED CARD AND PAPER IN A TRENCH 12+9 DEEP AND RECOVER WITH THE SOIL YOU DUG OUT. POSTIIVES THE SOIL BACTERIA WILL EAT THE PAPER AND CARD LEAVE BEHIND FIBRE AND VERY IMPROVED SOIL STRUCTURE AND SAVE HAVING TO WATER YOUR PLANTS EVERY DAY IN HOT SPELLS ALL AT NO COST NEWPAPER AND CARDBOARD IS FREELY AVALIABLE GIVE IT A GO YOU WILL BE SUPPRISED !!
I live in South Africa and heard a lady talking about burning the soil. She said that the desired soil is put into a 44 gallon drum that is cut in half down the length, and fire is made under it. She was not sure why this was done but said that crop yield was much better. I saw a comment about the pests living in the soil and wondered if this burning would deal with eggs of pests being destroyed during this process.
Again if they selling a book or now quick PDF file walk away. Everyone coming on selling merch and books. Same as courses they sell like how to flip houses.
Too much talking in the beginning. Lost interest.
I always thought rolly pollies were insects, but found out recently they're actually crustaceans. And I never noticed they had 14 legs. Also, they're not native to North America; they come from the Mediterranean. None of this is relevant to the video; it's just fun facts.
Woodchip growing seems easy enough for me to try
New
Can the foil just be one layer or folded several times like you show? And can you save the plastic cartons for the next year? Thanks.
Rollie pollies (aka sow bug, pill bug) will eat strawberries as well. They are my strawberry patches nemesis!
I hated our vegetable garden when I was a kid because all i did was pick weeds, garbage cans full. But I learned the basics of gardening, a life long interest. Something I dont see too many passing on to future generations. Thank you for the videos, very enjoyable ❤
Stumbled on this video, at my restaurant we have a ton of half gallon dairy, i wonder if half gallon jugs would work?
I use Thai Basil for pollinators because it is so easy to grow!
Great video . Great info , and I laughed out loud a few times . I appreciate your efforts and your sharing. Thank you !💕
Pill bugs decimate seedlings. Anyone who says otherwise is speaking from textbook memorization, not real life experience.
Where do you live in zone 7b? I live in upstate SC, I can do the jug thing here in 8a?
fine video… thanx for posting
Well done. Thanks
the sweet potatoes are spot on you should try increasing it with a hugelkultur bed
I just love watching you i am 73 lived on a farm now I have giving that up now I grow in my back yard. Thank you for all your helpful information.
Love these tips, and the additional ones in the comments!
I'm planning to make seed snails this year, and I think they'll work perfectly in combination with milk jugs! I'm excited to try it!
You could fill the holes in the concrete blocks with compost too, it will give you even more growing space, a lot of extra space. 👍 🇬🇧
